FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

BALTIMORE, MD (Friday, March 19, 2021) — Mayor Brandon M. Scott released the following statement on the Maryland General Assembly's passage of legislation to provide major funding for Maryland HBCUs:

“I want to thank Speaker Adrienne Jones for her steadfast pursuit of justice for Maryland HBCUs, and I urge Governor Hogan to approve this settlement. Historically Black Colleges and Universities in Maryland have been under-resourced since inception, yet their graduates continue to write the story of our great state and nation. Baltimore is a better place due to the values of service and community exemplified by Morgan State University and Coppin State University. Despite these contributions and legacies, leaders like Senator Charles Sydnor recognize that the vestige of discrimination in Maryland higher education is equally prevailing. Failure to address lingering disparities only perpetuates racism, which is why leaders must govern using a truly equitable approach.”
