FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

BALTIMORE, MD. (Wednesday, April 19, 2023) - Today, the City of Baltimore received nearly $475,000 from the Mallinckrodt bankruptcy settlement. This is the result of a lawsuit brought by Baltimore in 2018 against manufacturers, distributors, and retailers of opioid products for their roles in causing the opioid epidemic. In 2020, Mallinckrodt filed for bankruptcy protection, and through the bankruptcy, it paid less than $2 billion to settle thousands of lawsuits. This payment represents a very small fraction of the alleged value of those claims.

"While this is far less than the City deserves from Mallinckrodt in light of its egregious conduct in helping to create the opioid crisis, we are limited in our recovery due to the bankruptcy filing," said Baltimore City Mayor Brandon M. Scott. "This money will be utilized by the Health Department to help address the harms that opioids have brought upon our city."

This settlement does not affect the case against the rest of the defendants. "We are strongly committed to seeking justice against corporate wrongdoers that hurt Baltimore," said Acting City Solicitor Ebony M. Thompson. "We remain steadfast in our pursuit of litigation against the remaining defendants in this case."

The case was recently scheduled for trial in September 2024 in the Circuit Court for Baltimore City.

Baltimore City is represented by Sara Gross and Thomas Webb of the Baltimore City Department of Law and Susman Godfrey LLP.
